How was it formed?
In the 1940s, a British pilot, Freddie Bosworth, started an air taxi service to Doha and Dhahran from Bahrain. Later the company was formerly registered as the Gulf Aviation Company. This makes Gulf airlines one of the oldest air carriers in that region. The company initially started with a fleet comprising of 7 Avro Ansons, De Havilland DH.868 and a few bi-planes. At the beginning of 1950s, the British Overseas Airways became a strong stakeholder of the company.
Much later, in 1973, the government of Emirate, currently known as the Kingdom of Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and Abu Dhabi took over the stake of British Overseas Airways. The company was formed by signing a treaty where each company enjoyed a 25% stake in the company. Gulf Aviation was the parent company and Gulf Air was the subsidiary company.
